Manufactured Gas Plants

Manufactured gas plants are characterized by their legacy of coal tar waste contaminating soils, air, and groundwater with volatile chemicals such as benzene and other semivolatile chemicals, including carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Energy companies often did not deal with their waste responsibly, and let the contamination spread, buried and left it, or simply covered the waste and sold or donated the property for private or even public use. The nature of this contamination makes it a combined threat to air, soil, and water.

Exposure to coal tar wastes, and to the individual components of coal tar, has been associated with several types of cancer, including bladder cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer (melanoma), and kidney cancer. There are other non-cancer effects from exposure to coal tar, including irritant contact dermatitis and hyperpigmentation.
